postheadericon From Trash to Treasure-DIBELS nonsense words

 

We all know the saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." A  first grade teacher gave me this bag of foam dice, which was used in a previous math curriculum. Now that we have piloted and implemented our new math program, this bag of dice wasn't needed any longer. So, she gave them to me! 

After looking at them, measuring them, and imagineering them, I decided to use the foam dice to make a nonsense word game.

I took the dice home and measured them. Each side measured 1.5 inches. 

Now, I had to figure out how to get letters onto the dice. I didn't want the letters to be too big, as I wanted the dice to be able to roll on the foam edges. 

So, I created a document with letters to fit the dice. I inserted "Auto Shapes" in Microsoft Word and created a square to be 1.25 inches. Once I made the square, I copied 18 squares onto the page. Then, I inserted a text box into the squares. I copied that text box into each 1.25 inch square and put a letter in each one. I used letters that were easily recognizable to first graders, even if they were upside down on the die. In ten minutes, I had the document done. No problem!

It looked like this:

I printed the document and laminated it using my home laminator. If you don't have one, you must get one! They are great! 

I cut out all the letters. 

Now, I had to adhere the letters onto the blocks. It was time to get out my trusty hot glue gun. 

I glued the vowels onto one block, and the consonants onto the other two blocks.

Summer is in full swing and Educator Station has been busy, busy, busy! We have been enjoying lazy days on the beach, fun day trips, lots of time with family, and lots of rest and relaxtion. We have been to our local library twice to get books and have spent hours reading (I am so thankful to have children that love to read as much as I do)! It couldn't get any better than this! 

 

Before I left school for the school year, I prepared lots of posts for the summer with FREEBIES for you to download! 

Here's your first FREEBIE! With the new school year quickly appraoaching, I know I am going to start the year with the Review Unit in Reading Street. 

Students will be entering first grade from kindergarten and will have seen and read 40 sight words. Some may need a little review, so I made these word ring cards for the students to review in centers or at the teacher table. 

 

High Frequency Words

 

Mrs. Castro posted the High Frequency Words for each unit. Each word is on a flashcard. I use them all the time! I have these word cards in a pocket chart on my focus wall, I use them at my teacher table, and I use them in centers. They have so many uses and can be used anywhere in the classroom!

To make this center, you will need binder rings. 

I bought these binder rings at the Dollar Tree. I hadn't seen them there before, so I grabbed a few!  You can do so much with them!

In the packet below, you will see all 40 of the kindergarten sight words, to use as review the first few weeks of school. I made the cards, so that they would fit onto a card and go onto a binder ring easiily.

Once they were laminated and cut out, I punched a hole in each one, put them onto a ring, and it was done!

postheadericon Dollar Deals ~ Chip/Dip Serving Trays

I usually buy chip/dip serving trays for $1 or less each.  If you wait until the summer clearance sales begin you can really cash out on these!  I can make a bunch of easy sort games using these divider trays. I have several of them with beginning, ending, middle sounds, and vowels.

These are also great as a vocabulary center.  Using the Reading Street Amazing Words, I make a set of word cards and in each section of the chip tray I write an activity. Each of the sections are numbered.  The students roll a dice in the middle and complete the activity that matches what they rolled.  Then they write their answer on a recording sheet.  You can grab a free copy of the recording sheet HERE.  This is best used with your advanced group at the beginning of the year and then introduced as the year goes on to your other groups.

Let's not forget Math.  These trays are great to use with your money unit.  I use a 5 section tray for this activity. Place pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters into the outer sections and dice in the center.  Use it as in intervention or center activity to practice identifying coins, adding coins, or making change.

postheadericon Simple Sentence Rubric for First Graders

 

 I created this rubric last year, during the first year of Reading Street, and it worked really well for my students. Each of my students  have a writing folder. I save the very first writing sample, and then choose one sample a month to save in their writing folders.  

 
During the year, I conference with each of my students during each writing lesson to decide what they did great in their writing and what the student should work on in the next writing sample.  I set a "goal" for each student to work toward. By the end of first grade, I had my students being able to put sentences together to make a paragraph. They were writers!

Here's how I use this during writing time: 
Students are introduced to the objective of the lesson. In this lesson, students were introduced to writing simple sentences.
 
On a pocket chart, I have simple sentences written on sentence strips. We read and discuss what makes a good sentence. Students respond,"A sentence starts with a capital letter, there's spaces between the words, there's a period at the end of the sentence, the words are spelled correctly, and the words are written neatly on the line."
 
While they are studying the sentences, I have a large sheet of chart paper with the words "What makes a good simple sentence?" I write all their reponses on this sheet of paper around that question (Which is the objective of the lesson). Then, I review the answers on the large chart paper.
 
After, I hand out this writing rubric and explain how we are going to use it. I have the children write a simple sentence on lined paper. Once they are done, I model how to go through the rubric. As they read through each of the criteria on the rubric, if their sentence has this, they can color the happy face. If it doesn't, then they go back and correct their sentence. 
 
Once they feel their sentence has 5 smiley faces, then they come to me and I conference with them. As the year goes on, I challenge them to create a better sentence by asking them to use a describing word. So, as they grow as writers, the rubric, which I add to throughout the year, grows with them.
