postheadericon Unit 3.5 I’m A Caterpillar Writing Activity

My first graders just read "I'm A Caterpillar" as part of our Reading Street curriculum. We learned all about the life cycle of a butterfly, we read books about butterflies, and wrote about butterflies. Below, you will see some of the resources we used over the past week.

Of course, you can't learn about the life cycle of a butterfly without reading the classic, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar."

After we read a few stories, we used this packet for additional resources and activities. You will find a mini book and a cut and paste life cycle activity.

At the end of the week, we brought in our sequence words to help us sequence the life cycle of a butterfly. I used the mini book (in the above packet) to help brainstorm what happened first, next, then, and last.

First, Then Next Last

I used these word cards in my pocket chart to teach sequence.

As we brainstormed the steps in the life cycle, I put the sentences into my pocket chart for the children to copy onto their papers.

We used this graphic organizer to begin our sentence writing. Most often, I use this as their "sloppy copy."

They did a great job! Not only did we go through the writing process, we also practiced sequence and sentence structure. A job well done!

"Ruby in Her Own Time" is such a cute story! The kids loved reading about the cute little duck family and learned an important lesson at the same time..We all learn and do things on our own time!

Here are several resources you can use for this story.

I send home a skills sheet each week. This is the skills sheet that went home with this story.
